How to Focus On Work: 4 Tips to Focus
If you find yourself unable to focus on work, you are not alone. Many people are facing challenges with focus and concentration in today’s fast-paced world. This is due mainly to technology, which is a double-edged sword. While it has brought efficiency and speed to our lives, it has also introduced many interruptions and distractions.
1. Listen to Gamma Waves if You Want to Focus On Work:
Listening to those waves is really good if you can’t focus on work.
One of the Gamma Waves benefits is that they guide your brain toward the work you’re performing. They let you focus more and work for long hours without the loss of concentration and focus.
If you just type “Gamma Waves” on YouTube, you will find plenty of videos about them.
Here is an example of a YouTube video :
Gamma Waves
So plug in your headphones or you can use just the speakers of your desktop or mobile, and start listening while you’re performing a task.
2. Multitasking Is a Myth:
The Multitasking Myth. You must know that your brain was built to focus on one task, not two.
This means you’re studying or working and at the same time responding to messages on your mobile, scrolling on Facebook, or going from time to time on YouTube to watch a video.
This will destroy and result in low productivity and focus.
It’s important to know that you are losing 10 min of focus if you just turn your head to see a notification that pops up on your phone.
1 second of distraction = 10 minutes of loss of focus. (THAT’S HUGE !!!)
So, it is important if you want to focus on work. Hide your phone and close the useless tabs on your desktop while working on a task.
You can also follow the Pomodoro technique. This means you work for 25 min and relax for 5 min. You do it 4 times. and after that, you relax for 30 min. All this is without picking up your phone, playing video games, or replying to a message. This is important for the brain to be reprogrammed to focus on work. You cannot touch your phone until you finish your day’s tasks.
Here is a website called Pomofocus that does all the work for you:
(On this website they have 15 minutes for the long break, you can change it to 30 minutes or personalize it as you want)
3. Distracting Thoughts:
2 types of distracting thoughts make you unable to focus on work.
1. Doing something:
It’s normal sometimes when you’re working, you get a feeling of doing something. Something that is not related to the work you’re doing. Maybe you want to watch something, text or call your friend or family, or walk your dog 🐶
These types of thoughts won’t get out of your head until you do them. But…
There is a solution to that:
- You will choose an hour in the day specifically for these distractions. (e.g. 7 pm).
- Take a piece of paper and write down those thoughts.
- When it’s the time(e.g. 7 pm), pick the paper and start doing those things.
2. Emotions:
Something that makes you angry or sad. Someone you love or can’t stop thinking about it. The desire to watch porn. These thoughts live 90 seconds in your brain, and after that, they die.
All you have to do is breathe for 90 seconds. Try to inhale and exhale. Don’t breathe too fast or too slow, but normal.
